Huffington Post

October 28, 2011 by Sarah

I’ve got an essay today up on Huffington Post—my first on the site, which is very exciting. (It’s posted on the Gay Voices page, which I suppose makes me an honorary Gay Voice, which I rather like.) It’s about Fox News’ recent attack on the family of a transgender child. I hope you’ll read it and let me—and HuffPo readers—know what you think!

Thanks,

Sarah

Congrats ! Eloquently said as usual…. Keith Ablow should learn when to shut his mouth. I love the quote from the article. “Until You Have a Gender-Nonconforming Child, Stop Condemning Those Who Do ” I am going to use it often .
Keep it up Sarah you are the best!

While I agree with your article, but I wonder what the reason is to be reluctant about hormone blocking treatment that is administered after cautious judgement only.

Such treatments have been carried out in the Netherlands (at the Medical Centre at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam) for example and since a long time. The leading scientists in this field (profs: Louis Gooren, now emeritus; Peggy Cohen-Kettenis, and prof of paediatric endocrinology Henriette Delemarre-van de Waal), .
The center has ca 80 new candidates a year, of which a much smaller number might be eligible for further treatment after a time of diagnosis. (more details in the book).
Results for gender-variant children have been tremendously beneficial. Those children, who decide finally not to transition, jump of, and for the others it has helped/is helping them to avoid puberty in the wrong gender.

There is a book about a bunch of these children, partly a photo book, Ellen de Visser/Sarah Wong “Inside out”. ISBN 978-90-89102-42-3.
The authors followed these children for about 6-7 years or so, through puberty.

Other examples could be found in other countries – best known pop-singer Kim Petras, who transitioned finally with 16.
